Politec Solidária
How can an IT company contribute to a society that values justice and citizenship? Politec answered that question in 2001 by founding Politec Solidária, an organization that promotes digital inclusion among minority populations in Brazil through partnerships and volunteer work.
Politec Solidária follows two lines of action:
Structured campaigns: these campaigns are related to basic and advanced computer courses – free of charge – having other organizations as partners. Classes are planned and taught by Politec employees with the support of the company’s training department. Courses last an average of 40 hours and take place at Politec’s headquarters and at Politec Solidária’s Computer and Citizenship School. Since 2003, 1,657 people have taken courses given by 137 volunteers.
Emergency campaigns: these campaigns handle donations and volunteer services for daycare centers, orphanages and nursing homes. Although not Politec’s main focus, they take place from time to time whenever necessary or suggested by Politec’s employees. Since 2003, about 2,000 people have benefitted from emergency campaigns which involved 560 volunteers.
All of Politec Solidária’s actions depend on volunteer participation through regional committees. Filling out an application form for a database is optional, and all work is performed by volunteers.
In 2005 and 2006, Politec was awarded the “Citizen-Company” Trophy for showing social responsibility in its operations. This award was given during Brazil’s National Forum of Corporate Citizenship.
